Operation of Critical Processes at a Wastewater Treatment Plant


For critical infrastructure such as wastewater treatment plants, power outages bring not only operational shutdowns but also potential environmental risks and public safety hazards. When grid failure is not an option, a truly reliable, autonomous, and intelligent energy system becomes an essential necessity.

Recently, a 408kWh integrated solar-plus-storage project—led by Battery DepotMex and featuring Victron Energy core equipment along with Pytes V12 batteries—was commissioned at a large-scale wastewater treatment plant. Operating in 24/7 self-consumption mode, the system uses the grid solely as a final backup, achieving energy autonomy under zero-tolerance conditions for power interruptions.

System Configuration:

To meet the plant's round-the-clock operational power demands, a high-performance hybrid PV-plus-storage system was deployed, comprising:

 

l  12 × Victron Energy Quattro 48/10000-120V (15 kVA) inverters

l  10 × MPPT 450/200 solar charge controllers

l  34 × Duravolt by Pytes 12 kWh battery modules

 

With a total storage capacity of 408kWh and a system power rating of 180kVA, the installation can sustain continuous operation for several hours without solar input. The parallel configuration of 12 inverters provides ample power redundancy—a prerequisite for truly uninterrupted operation.

 

Pytes V12 Battery: Proven Reliability at the Core

 

As one of the system's key components, the Pytes V12 battery delivers high quality and performance, ensuring robust nonstop operation:

 

l  Safe & Reliable: Integrated precharge circuit and battery circuit breaker emergency stop; optional built-in fire suppression system.

l  All-Weather Adaptability: IP66 outdoor rating, C4-M corrosion protection, and integrated heating pads(optional) for reliable operation under harsh environmental conditions.

l  High Energy & Long Cycle Life: Automotive-grade 230Ah cells, 11.776kWh per module, with 6,000+ cycles.


Project Value:

Designed specifically for continuous operation, this hybrid system outperforms traditional backup solutions such as diesel generators—which suffer from slow response, high maintenance costs, carbon emissions, and noise. The key benefits include:

 

l  24/7 Uninterrupted Operation: Ensures continuous performance of critical wastewater treatment processes, delivering power reliability under zero-tolerance outage conditions.

l  Maximized PV Self-Consumption: Prioritizes solar energy utilization, improving overall energy efficiency and enabling daily power autonomy via PV plus storage.

l  Minimal Grid Reliance: The grid serves only as an extreme-case backup, drastically reducing dependency on external power supplies.

l  Enhanced System Stability & Resilience: Significantly improves supply reliability for critical loads, achieving energy autonomy and long-term operational security.

This project represents a successful application of advanced energy storage systems within critical infrastructure. It demonstrates that combining photovoltaics with scalable lithium battery storage offers a viable energy solution for scenarios where downtime is unacceptable.
